Division 4 - Volume 06

Product Review (submitted on 15 February 2017):

Of the big three Crawford cop shows (Homicide, Division 4 and Matlock Police), I think Division 4 is probably the best of the three, that's not to demean the other two in any way - all three are top class, it's just that Division 4 tended to cover all manner of crimes from shoplifting and traffic offences to murder and everything in between. It also has a slightly larger regular cast than the other two, so there is a bit more variety there, as well as the two worlds of the uniform cop and the plain clothes cop, something which Cop Shop would also do a few years later.

As for the show itself, the regular cast is great, the guest actors in various roles are like a who's who of Australian showbiz, the location filming gives it great realism (as it does with the other shows) particularly the regular night scenes which being in black & white often gives it a film-noir feel. Whilst I never grew up or lived in Melbourne, it's fun to see the old streetscapes, vehicles, shops, garages, trams, etc. It's a wonderful time-capsule of late 60s/early 70s suburban Australia, in fact for me just this reason alone it's worth watching, plus just like listening to old songs, watching these classic old shows is a great way of reliving one's youth.
